Making Brainstorming Meetings Accessible for Blind Users

چکیده
Co-located meetings, as a fundamental part of our professional and educational lives heavily rely on visual information. In such meetings visual information consists of a) the artifact or “content” part (as for instance in brainstorming meetings the mind maps) and b) of nonverbal communication elements (like deictic gestures and gazes). Blind persons to a large extent do not have access to these important aspects of information and communication which are only available via the visual channel. Personal support is considered to be the only viable solution, but can only be made available in exceptional cases. This puts blind people at a disadvantage. This paper presents first research results focusing on tracking, analyzing and representing non-visual information and communication elements to blind people to allow more independent access and participation in communication. We present a general system architecture as well as a prototype implementation presenting visual information also to blind users, so that the information gap between sighted and blind participants is reduced in colocated meetings. These activities form the basis for our future research activities on access to non-verbal communication for blind people.

Presenting Non-verbal Communication to Blind Users in Brainstorming Sessions
In co-located meetings, which are part of our professional and educational lives, information exchange relies not only on information exchange using artifacts like bubbles in mind-maps or equations presented on electronic whiteboards in classrooms, but also to a large extent on non-verbal communication. In the past much effort was done to make the artifact level accessible but also non-verbal c...
متن کاملExploiting SenseCam for Helping the Blind in Business Negotiations
During business meetings, blind persons are not able to see the meaningful movements, and facial gestures of the participants. The formal meeting minutes and / or participants’ conversation during the meeting normally lack this important feedback in order to determine who is in favor and who is against their proposed suggestions. This is crucial in business negotiations, where one has to convin...
متن کاملAccessibility of Brainstorming Sessions for Blind People
Today, research focuses on the accessibility of explicit information for blind users. This gives only partly access to the information flow in brainstorming sessions, since non-verbal communication is not supported. Advances in ICT however allow capturing implicit information like hand gestures as important part of non-verbal communication. Thus, we describe a system that al-lows integrating bl...
متن کاملBrainstorming under constraints: why software developers brainstorm in groups
Group brainstorming is widely adopted as a design method in the domain of software development. However, existing brainstorming literature has consistently proven group brainstorming to be ineffective under the controlled laboratory settings. Yet, electronic brainstorming systems informed by the results of these prior laboratory studies have failed to gain adoption in the field because of the l...
متن کاملMaking an Accessible Forum More Usable for Blind Users: a Case Study
In this paper, we show in which way an accessible forum can be used as an educational tool and can be improved by making it more friendly to vision impaired users. For this purpose, we considered an online course for ECDL (European Computer Driving Licence), specifically addressed to blind and low vision people. First, we describe the use of an accessible forum during an online course for the E...
